Securing the Nation: Accelerating government cybersecurity

10 Apr 2026

Cyber threats are growing in scale and sophistication — and governments can no longer afford to respond at the pace of yesterday's systems.

A new paper developed through collaboration between NIIN, Cisco and the University of Canberra ‘Securing the Nation: Accelerating Government Cybersecurity in an Age of Digital Disruption’, explores the practical steps needed to build a more secure and resilient public sector.

The paper makes the case for addressing entrenched legacy infrastructure, shifting to risk-based funding models and preparing now for emerging challenges such as post-quantum cryptography. It also states that no single organisation can tackle these challenges alone, ecosystems like NIIN have a critical role to play in enabling safe testing, prototyping and validation of new security approaches.

Securing the nation requires more than new technology. It requires new ways of working together.
